I promise it’s not that bad.

I love country music for it’s good vibes. If I ever need an upbeat playlist I’ll go to my country playlist and bop to the twangy songs and cheesy lyrics. A quick background of me and country music. When I was growing up I sadly had no control of the AUX cord. So I listened to Kicks 101.5 in every car we had. And if we drove out of range, my dad would scan for the next closest country station (which was often 99.9). That’s what I grew up with. I’d know the lyrics to every song that came on and I’d sing along, much to the annoyance of my family.

So, for the first 10 to 12 years of my life I listened to nothing but country. I had no other way to listen to music besides the occasional songs on my IPod from my dad’s itunes account. Because it was such an integral part of my childhood, as a young adult it’s comfort music to me. If I have no other music to listen to or maybe I just want something I know pretty well, I’ll listen to my country playlist. It never fails to fill me with good vibes and energizes me with a small pep in my step. If I could I would dance to it every time I listened, but I value my reputation.

Of course, country music has its emotional appeal too. there aren’t just songs about cold drinks, trucks, and girls. there’s a little angsty heartache in there. it’s different from the heart-wrenching sad songs by people like Lewis Capaldi and Jeremy Zucker. I think it’s similar to songs you can wallow in your feelings too but still dance. One of my personal favorites is “Draw Me a Map” by Dierks Bentley. He is longing for someone. i love the emotion in the song and how he includes what I believe to be a fiddle and a guitar that pair wonderfully together. The lyrics that hit the most are probably in the chorus, “Help me find the road you're on I just need directions home Draw me a map that leads me back to you.” Something in my poor hopeless romantic heart just loves that line.,

There aren’t just sad country songs. You can’t forget the songs that make country music what it is. The farm songs about chucking hay and drinking a nice cold drink afterward. I couldn’t mention classic country songs without mentioning “Chicken Fried” by Zac Brown Band. They sing about everything from “a pair of jeans that fit just right” to “a cold beer on a Friday night.” This is what seems to give country music a bad rap. Whenever I talk with my friends about country music or even look at memes on the internet, the common misconception is that country music is all about one of three things; beer, women, trucks. I will agree its a good 80% of the songs BUT they’re good songs about beer, women, and trucks!
