“Bullet journaling is game-changing: I learned so much about myself while having it as an outlet to express my creativity. ”

— Joline Tran

Ryder Carroll, a digital product designer and inventor of the Bullet Journal (BuJo for short), was diagnosed with learning disabilities early in life, which further inspired him to create new ways to be more focused and productive. After years of trial and error, he developed a methodology that strongly focuses on organization and time-management. First shared with the public in 2013, BuJo became an Internet sensation, garnering attention in many social media platforms. To this day, the bullet journal is used to be a medium as an artistic element or a diary; it holds record of deadlines, and even keeps track of past memories and mental health states.

Life is a journey that circulates between climbing up and down, and overcoming the unexpected holes and loops that leave us feeling detached, sometimes. With all these challenges, it’s healthy to keep a record of your emotions. From the small milestones you hope to accomplish, to the places you want to go to, and to the habits you strive to keep, bullet journaling is a space of creativity for self-exploration. Bullet journaling can also be as simple or as complex you want it to be; you define your own aesthetic.

Try using symbols that can be referred to a certain task or event. Here are some examples to get you started:

  • A circle for a task that needs to be completed

  • A filled in circle for a completed task

  • An asterisk for an important task

  • An arrow for tasks that are pushed to a different day

  • A square for an important deadline

  • A star for birthdays and holidays

A future or monthly log can help with keeping track of habits. Both allows for a lot of versatility and freedom. Create a task, list, events, goals, and integrate a theme to your liking. Some may include minimalistic, maximalistic, kawaii, floral, vintage, holiday-related, and many more!

Divide the page up to your liking: weekly, monthly, yearly. Then, you can structure your journal to your desire and utilize symbols for different tasks and activities. Many people find this to be a helpful way to organize daily tasks in a timely manner; whatever it may be, fit the journal to your style.

My first intention that led me to join the Bujo Club was to discover a community of like-minded people, that expresses their creativity on journal pages. Bujo meetings are a space where members talk about their ideas and show individuality through their spreads.
